TW: Mention of sexual assault and rape
Welcome back to the blog!
Today we will be covering what the process of reporting sexual assault through Clemson University Police Department and Clemson City Police Department is like. Mackenzie and Abigail interviewed Michelle Young, a Sergeant of Crime Prevention and a Victim Advocate for CUPD. She has worked with this police department for 21 years and gave us fantastic information and advice about the reporting process.
At Clemson University, about 20 percent of first-year students have experienced sexual assault, whether it be unwanted sexual contact, rape, or any harrassment. The number increases when we look at the entire undergraduate population. These survivors need a safe place to report and get help. Thankfully, Michelle Young and CUPD have a system that works with students and vouches for them. The CUPD’s goal for working with survivors is to treat them with dignity and respect while allocating them resources.
In this podcast, Michelle Young covers the entire reporting process and what to expect, where you can file reports, and what can happen after you file a report. She also goes over the overlap between Clemson City and Clemson University Police Department. The resources that Michelle lays out are incredibly helpful and we recommend that you check it out for more detail. The podcast is linked in the blog for those who are interested.
